By the 1890s, the American cowboy had become somewhat of a folk hero. It's been said that Frederic Remington's paintings, sculptures, and illustrations combine the realism and romance of the Western cowboy. In Aiding a Comrade, Remington has chosen to depict a dramatic scene. One can see that a cowboy has fallen from this horse while riding. His fellow cowboys attempt to help him and prevent him from being injured by their horses. Remington leaves the fate of the rider up to the onlooker. Aiding a Comrade is another excellent example of the work for which Remington is best known.
